How to confirm this on the device
- Open the conversation in your normal texting app.
- On Android, start typing: Google Messages shows a lock on the send button when the chat is end-to-end encrypted.
- On Android, read the banner at the top of the thread — an encrypted thread is labelled “RCS chat with” the contact’s name or number.
- On iPhone, look for the lock icon in the RCS chat; Apple added it to mark end-to-end encrypted conversations.

Why we will not just say yes or no
Every other page you will find on this question answers it once, in general. That answer is either "yes, RCS is encrypted now" or "no, RCS is not encrypted", and both are wrong often enough to be dangerous, because the truth depends on a combination.
An encrypted conversation between an iPhone and an Android phone needs three things to line up at the same time. The iPhone has to be running software new enough to support it. The Android phone has to be running a messaging app new enough to support it — which in practice means Google Messages, kept current. And the carriers have to have switched the encrypted variant on for both of those specific lines, which they do on their own timetables rather than all at once.
Get two out of three and you have a fast, high-quality, modern conversation that your carrier can read. That is not a hypothetical failure mode. It is the most likely state for a lot of people right now, and it is precisely the state that a general answer hides from you.
What encryption does not protect you from
This part matters more than the yes-or-no. End-to-end encryption protects a message while it travels between two devices. It does nothing about anything else, and people consistently overestimate what they are buying.
It does not protect the copy on the other person's phone, which they can screenshot, forward, or show to someone. It does not protect a copy in a cloud backup if that backup is not itself encrypted in a way the provider cannot open. It does not hide who you talked to and when — that metadata is how the message gets routed, so it exists regardless. And it does nothing at all if someone has access to either unlocked phone.
